Which Super Smash Bros characters

So the last few weeks have been really busy. I went to the ECCC, had a birthday, got sick, and my family is now addicted to Agents of SHIELD. Feel free to be angry, but at least understand why.

I have been trying to figure out what to write, video, or even talk about with others. I sent some photos out, and have a nice collection of what I saw at the convention, so you have that for the moment. Also, I am preparing a piece about what all I saw, but that needs more time.

On the other hand, I just realized that we need to talk about the latest news, and that is Smash Bros. At the last Nintendo Direct, it was announced that we could request which new fighter could be part of the game. That is an amazing thing, and I really want some of my favorite characters to be in it. The problem is, I can’t decide on which specific one.

I am not the only one. Many companies want their big stars to be in the game. Even competitors to Nintendo are cool with it. Want Banjo and Kazooie? Phil Spencer says go for it. If they knew how to get in Master Chief, I am sure they would.

The problem is that some characters would make great assist trophies as well. So, for this article, I will name characters, and then discuss their merits. We will see if they would make a great character or assist. I will write out some ideas for levels based on their games.  I will also try to narrow them down a bit.

Goemon
Games
  • Goemon- NES
  • Mystical Ninja - Super NES
  • Mystical Ninja - N64
Goemon is from a game series going all the way to the NES. The Goemon series has had several iterations in Japan, and very few here in the states. The character is based off of Ishikawa Goemon a famous thief in Japanese folklore. The characters, settings, and story are incredibly Japanese and weird. There is a giant robot that has his own show tune. In the N64 game, there is a level based on food. The soup section made me hungry every time.

Fighter
As a fighter Goemon would have somewhat short jump, but a long hit radius. He can throw coins and ninja stars. The best trick with him is to build him up with attacks. This way, his attacks are longer, and stronger. His super move would likely be calling in the giant robot with the showtune.
His grappling hook would help him move faster along the area.
Assist
He calls out Ebisamaru, and the clock knight character to waylay everyone with their attacks. Actually each one could be an assist trophy.
Level
A level for Goemon would be on Goemon Impact, as he plows through various parts of Japan. Things like rolls, and soup go flying. Battle it out, as he battles it out.
Verdict
I would love to see Goemon, but he is pretty obscure. I don’t really know how he would play as a full blown character, but an assist trophy would be awesome. The level would be the most fun though.

Trevor Belmont
Games
  • Castlevania 3
Any Belmont would be awesome really, but Trevor has some extra oomph to him. He has friends that have different powers to help him. He was one of the many great warriors who whipped their way to Dracula’s doom. He had all sorts of extra powers he could change into.
Fighter
As a fighter I would want two very different forms. The first would be a fully played out Belmont character that has the ability to switch weapons based on needs. So knives, axes, the cross, holy water, and others can be used as he attacks. His whip can be pointed in any direction just like in Super Castlevania. He has the dash attacks like in Dracula X. Let’s not forget the ability to swing using the whip. Also, it changes depending on how much damage received. Longer and stronger as you go. The super attack depends on which item they are using at the moment.

The second would be a Trevor Belmont that can turn into the other characters in Castlevania 3. Turn into the magic welder Sypha, Pirate Grant the Nasty, Alucard, or Trevor with a quick combo. Grant can climb walls, while Alucard can fly. Each character is pretty good on their own, but switching between them makes you amazing. The super attack is them combining their powers.
Assist
  • Dozens of bats fly out in an area making it impossible to be on that platform
  • Zombies
  • The belmonts run around whiping at anything nearby
  • Sypha throws magic
  • Grant chooses out a character and hunts him
  • The Axe knight charges around while throwing axes
  • Medusa’s head moves around while throwing snakes
  • Hundreds of those little hunchbacks charge through.
Level
A large area built with various themes from Castlevania. The very top is Dracula’s tower, and should not be entered into.
Verdict
The Belmont character is more likely than the team effort. I would love that level. Honestly, this would be a great character to play, and even more fun to master.

Alucard
Games
  • Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Alucard was in his own game about killing Dracula. He showed up in other games, but was more of a side character.
Fighter
The ability to transform into bats, myst, and a wolf is a great combination. It means he has an elusive fighting style, while running around swording people. He would fight like a belmont, but his sword would be shorter, and his myst lets him dodge attacks.
Assist
  • Alucard appears, and transforms into something. He could be himself, a giant scary wolfman, a bat that throws fire, or a myst that damages anyone that touches him.
  • A throwing cross like from the game
  • Various swords
  • The minotaur and his giant axe attack
Level
I am sort of hoping for a level that has dracula’s castle, and then you hit something and its all upside down.
Verdict
If the Belmont doesn’t get in, then Alucard should totally be a playable character. He has so much to work with, and a style that few other characters could have.

Strider
Games
  • Strider Arcade
  • Strider NES
  • Strider II
  • Strider PC
  • Marvel vs Capcom series
My favorite arcade game. Gravity changes, bosses make surprise attacks, and everything is just awesome. The only problem I have with this game is his haircut.
Fighter
With his assist robots, he can do anything. Strider has a very high leap, can slide tackle, grab onto all sorts of ledges, and has a long sword. In other words, he can destroy whole armies of giant robots and terror wolves without even thinking about it.
Assist
  • Robots from the game can be picked up. They move around the player, and fight with him for a while
  • Strider sword appears, and lets you make long range attacks
  • The very first boss fight appears. Men jump together to become a giant snake creature.
  • Giant Ape Robot
Level
Each stage of the game is different. You go from frozen tundra, to jumping planes in the same level. So a constantly changing level that even changes the gravity would be great.
Verdict
Since Strider has already been in a fighting game, it wouldn’t be hard to put him in Smash Bros.

Thor
Games
  • Marvel vs Capcom series
  • Various Marvel games
There is a simple rule in the Marvel universe: NEVER PISS OFF THOR. The battle goes great, and then the enemy pisses him off, and he hits them with more power than they can imagine. He is the God of Thunder, and can topple mountains with his hammer.
Fighter
Thor has a powerful attack. He can do long range by throwing his hammer, and powerful short range when swinging it. Get him in the right spot, and he can call forth the very forces of nature.
Assist
  • He appears, and all are destroyed by his wrath
  • Loki appears, and turns someone into a horse.
Level
  • Asgard floating in the sky as you battle on top of the city. Airships flying everywhere.
  • New York as various others jump in to attack like Dr. Doom.
Verdict
The only problem with this, is that there is no way to tame his powers.
Phil Coulson
Games
  • Marvel Cinematic Universe
Agent Coulson is a human that can take on, and even befriend giant hulking beasts from all over. With Agents of SHIELD, we see him strategize and move around major forces.
Fighter
He would die instantly. Unless he was armed with all sorts of gadgets and guns.
Assist
  • Agent May appears, and begins to shoot anyone near her
  • The hellicarier brings down the pain
  • Skye
  • Deathlok
Level
  • Aboard the hellicarier, then move over to New York, and then fly over on the bus.
Verdict
It would be an interesting character to play. Instead of the super powers like others, he relies on letting the big guys destroy each other as he snipes them from afar.

A Dalek
Games
  • Various Doctor Who games
I thought about Cybermen and others, but a Dalek with all of his powers would be awesome.
Fighter
A bit heavy, and cumbersome, his flight skill helps him. It would play like a ROB only with shields.
Assist
  • A swarm of Daleks fly around and shoot at people.
Level
  • A dalek ship
  • a gravel pit
  • A surprisingly Welsh looking London
  • Asteroid field
Verdict
A dalek would really add to the feeling that anything in the universe could be fighting. It would also make a fun character to play as you ran around.

Mickey Mouse
Games
  • Magical Quest series
I am specifically using this game because Mickey is so dynamic within it. He has multiple powers, and costumes to use.
Fighter
Depending on the costume, he does different things. Firefigher mickey has a powerful water hose that loses pressure. Magic mickey can make flying carpets. Regular mickey has a grappling hook, and the power to throw random objects.
Assist
  • Donald Duck attacks with an angry tirade
  • Goof runs around and trips people
  • Mickey throws stuff at folks
Level
The up in the air one would be a lot of fun. the vulture attacking at random times would be an added bit.
Verdict
Not likely, but man would it be fun.

Cloud Strife
Games
  • Final Fantasy 7 series -sort of weird saying that
  • Ehrgeiz
Cloud is one of the most recognized RPG characters of all time. His spiky hair and giant sword is instantly recognizable. He was also in a fighting game you never heard of.
Fighter
He has magic attacks, and a giant sword. As he uses his attacks, they slowly gain more power.
Assist
  • Various summons that take forever as people continue to fight each other.
  • Tifa runs around punching people
Level
  • The broken down city
  • Amusement park with racing Chocobos
  • The place where Aeris Dies.
Verdict
It would be fun, and I hope there is a version of him that looks like the small model form of him.
Ryu
Games
  • Street Fighter series
  • Several Capcom games
I happen to like Chun Li better, but Ryu is the most recognizable. His fire shot, and hurricane kick are great.
Fighter
I just realized, he would play a lot like Mario.
Assist
  • Ryu throws a giant fireball
Level
  • Various Street fighter levels
Verdict
He would be a fun character, but wouldn’t add a lot to the game.

Virtual ON
Games
  • Virtual On Series
A great arcade game about giant robots. I can’t decide on the right robot.
Fighter
The characters would be too big really as fighters.
Assist
  • Various characters come out, and slash at the fighters
Levels
  • Flying around a city as the robots battle. Sometimes their explosions hit the area you are on.
Verdict
Not a great fighter, but an amazing level and Assist trophy

Discussion
I am fairly certain that Thor, Agent Coulson, Mickey Mouse, and a Dalek are not possible because of copywrite issues. I would love to see Agent May as an assist trophy, but I doubt Disney would allow it.

A Virtual On Robot would make a better assist, as would Goemon. Ryu is too similar to Mario to really bring in.

This leaves Cloud, A Belmont, Alucard, and Strider. Oddly enough, Cloud, Alucard, and Strider would be very similar. They would be sword welding characters with extra powers. Strider would be the easier character to implement. Cloud would be the hardest. Alucard would be the most different.

I actually prefer Alucard and Strider over Cloud. This leaves Two fairly awesome characters. I will simply submit them both.

Thus, the winners are Strider and Alucard! Woot.
