Voxie Box

At the Indie meetup, the first guys I interviewed said that there was a hologram display that would blow my mind. They were right. The Voxie Box is the first volumetric 3D display. It looks like the hologram from Star Wars.

The first thing I said when seeing it was, “Do we have Princess Leia?”

The guy did not miss a beat and said, “Only for George Lucas.”

The display was of various Star Wars stuff. They twisted, and turned as I moved around it to see that the display held up from every angle. The display guy then proceeded to blow our minds in every way possible.

The first thing he did was show us trippy visuals using random equations. The display changed in real time as anyone could alter them, or make brand new ones.

Then he decided to up everything by showing us scans using the kinect. I gave the first Shaka ever on such a display. With a few keystrokes, he had the device scanning us in real time, and displaying our images on the screen.

It had to happen, so the lady watching with us was put onto center stage, and said “Help Me ObiWan, you’re my only hope.”

The display was then given over to a motion sensing device, and we could draw in 3D. It was a simple drawing program, only it followed your finger in whatever direction you went. I drew a house. These guys blew my mind.

This was not mind blowing enough. He then placed a controller in someone’s hand and showed off the very first videogame using the display. It was a simple NES Zelda game, but in full 3D.

The reason for making such an amazing display was that the creator wanted to use the kinect to its full advantage. He didn’t talk a lot about it, but wore a nametag that gave a nice address. The VoxieBox is probably the thing you should be watching for, because it is the future. Check out another review of this amazing display here.
